Look Close, See Far: A Cultural Portrait of the Maya Photographs by Bruce Martin

Through the black and white images of photographer Bruce Martin, visitors will see a documentation of the Maya, a group of Central American Indians, and the remaining fragments of the endangered society and world they inhabit. Today, the Maya live in Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Southern Mexico.

The Masterworks of Guy Coheleach at RTPI

Renowned wildlife artist Guy Coheleach is an adventurer who turns his real-life experiences into magnificent pieces of artwork. We are excited to welcome Coheleach’s work back to the Institute’s walls from February 15-May 15, 2008. On display are 44 originals, including works done in oil, pencil, gouache, watercolor, and acrylic. Roger Tory Peterson Institute to Cosponsor Workshop

HONESDALE, PA – The Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI) in Jamestown, New York, is cosponsoring a nature workshop focused on writing for children.

“Writing from Nature: Blazing a Trail from Field Journal to Publication” will be held April 23–27, 2008, in a mixed-hardwood forest near Honesdale, Pennsylvania. Aspiring writers will learn how to help children connect with nature through books, magazine articles, and other works.

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour April 7th

RTPI will be the host for the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour at 7:00 PM on Monday, April 7, 2008 at the Reg Lenna Civic Center in Jamestown. The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an international competition featuring the world’s best footage on mountain and adventure subjects. The film festival, which began in 1976, takes place annually in early November at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (RTPI) in Jamestown, NY, seeks a Director of Development. The Mission of RTPI is to preserve the legacy of Roger Tory Peterson by widespread promotion of his works through the teaching and study of nature, and to increase knowledge, appreciation, respect and responsibility for the natural world. The DD is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of the comprehensive fundraising activities of RTPI. Our current exhibit, Rare & Elusive Birds of North America, opened on Friday, November 9th, 2007, and runs through February 10, 2008. This spectacular exhibition gives visitors a chance to view photography by William Burt, of Old Lyme, CT.
Late on a June night, in the middle of a vast Spartina marsh in eastern Maryland, William Burt achieved his long-time goal: to photograph the Black Rail, a mythic red-eyed bird so rare and secretive, so deftly elusive in the fine grass of its meadow home, that few ornithologists had ever even seen it.
